Review by Heather Dewhurst www.kitchenwitchhearth.net
Pauline Breen is obviously passionately devoted to Brigid, her enthusiasm is palpable in the style and expression of her writing. This book is the authors deeply personal exploration of connections she can envisage between her matron deity and Maman Brigitte.
The author believes that ‘Maman Brigitte is an Afro-Irish dark Goddess,’ as this is the sentence with which she begins the third chapter, in which she documents how she perceives Maman Brigitte has and can help devotees during different periods of their lives. Also provided are associations, together with suitable offerings and examples of possible prayers to use to connect with Her.
It would have been very interesting to have had more of the conversation with Cate, the Haitian Voodoo Priestess the author met in New Orleans, to enable the reader to ascertain her thoughts on the associations between Brigid and Maman Brigitte.
The reader has been given a good bibliography should they wish to delve deeper for themselves.

Pagan Portals – Maman Brigitte by Pauline Breen
Maman Brigitte takes a close look at the unique persona of Brigitte, who is a blend of the goddesses Brigid of Ireland and Oya of Western Africa. This book engages with Vodou as a religion and outlines the circumstances surrounding Brigitte’s emergence in Haiti during the slave trade, tracing her development into a prominent figure for both Haitian and Irish immigrants who experienced similar social and economic circumstances in the US state of Louisiana. Through research, fieldwork, and personal experience, the author uncovers the story of Brigitte in Haiti, Brigitte in Louisiana, and Brigitte today, a dark goddess in the contemporary world.
