Sumerian mythology is one of my personal favourite topics to explore in videos and the chance to create a full video diving deep in the story of Inanna’s descent into the underworld was one I couldn’t resist. This version of the story is pulled from Journey to the Dark Goddess by Jane Meredith, who did a fantastic job with writing it.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it. I’d like to explore other Sumerian deities in future videos, so if you have any suggestions for ones that would be good to do a deep dive into, let me know! I think Enki could be a really interesting one to explore. I’m beginning to ramble, though, so I’ll cut that short there and just say, enjoy Inanna’s descent!
Inanna’s Descent to the Underworld | The Complete Sumerian Myth Explained
Step into the ancient world of Mesopotamia and witness one of the most powerful and haunting myths ever told. This is the complete story of Inanna’s Descent to the Underworld — a tale of power, death, and rebirth that shaped the foundations of Sumerian mythology.
Inanna, the Queen of Heaven and Earth (later known as Ishtar in Babylon), dares to descend into the realm of her dark sister, Ereshkigal, ruler of the dead. Stripped of her divine powers at the seven gates, Inanna faces the Eye of Death, her own destruction, and a resurrection that forever changes the balance between life and death.
In this video, we explore:
🔹 Who Inanna was in Sumerian and Mesopotamian mythology
🔹 The meaning of her descent to the Underworld
🔹 The role of Ereshkigal, the Dark Goddess of death and grief
🔹 Themes of initiation, transformation, and rebirth in the myth
🔹 How this story still resonates with witchcraft, paganism, and goddess spirituality today
This myth is preserved on clay tablets written over 4,000 years ago — yet its themes of loss, transformation, and renewal remain timeless.
