Katie Ness has woven together a magical book to inspire anyone to start creating their own words to enchant their lives.
Originally forged from the pain she experienced in the loss of loved ones, the author wrote them poems, spells and invocations. In this book, she provides us with the evidence that humans have utilised words, in images as well as those with letters, from the archaeological finds in cave art across the world. Going on to describe those who would have wielded the power of words, the priestesses of ancient civilisations, how the sacred divine was largely lost over the years, where it can still be found.
I appreciated that one of the chapters is ‘Words Are Spells – That’s Why They Call It Spelling’, it is a phrase often heard but this book encourages the reader to delve deep into the path of a wordsmith, to write whether poetry or as a journal, using this as a ritual to uncover the power that words can have on our lives.

Word Witchery by Katie Ness
Abundant with archeological finds, historical research, practical rituals and spells, this book sheds fresh light on ancient magical word craft and unearths the fragmented lives and voices of women mystical poets, writers, chantresses, and bards; many almost lost to obscurity. From Petroglyphic stone magic traversing caves and desert gorges, incantation bowls found in the ancient Near East, votive tablets to goddesses across the mediterranean, notation blessing knives of renaissance Europe and more, Word Witchery explores our intrinsic desire to commune with the divine and supernatural forces via poetry and magical writing. Includes practical writing ritual and spell prompts for the modern Word Witch and Poetry Priestess to connect with feminine divinity, to conjure their own poetry magic and weave their worlds with words.
