Meet the author is a series of articles intended to introduce you to our wonderful authors. Learn about the books they’ve written, the spiritual pathways they’ve traversed and some fun little tidbits… introducing Rachel Patterson!

Tell us about yourself….

I am an English witch who has been walking the Pagan pathway for well over thirty years. A working wife, mother and grandmother who has been lucky enough to have had over 30 books published (so far), some of them becoming best sellers. My passion is to learn, I love to study and have done so from books, online resources, schools and wonderful mentors over the years and still continue to learn each and every day, but I have learnt the most from actually getting outside and doing it. I like to laugh and bake cake.

Host of the Pagan Portal Podcast, produced by Moon Books Publishing and released twice a month on the Moon Books YouTube channel and all your usual podcast providers, such as Spotify. It is my pleasure to give talks to pagan groups and co-run open rituals and workshops run by the Kitchen Witch Coven. High Priestess of the Kitchen Witch Coven and an Elder at the online Kitchen Witch School of Natural Witchcraft. A regular columnist with Fate & Fortune magazine and Pagan Dawn. You will find my regular ramblings on my own personal blog and YouTube channel.

My craft is a combination of old religion, witchcraft, Wicca, hedge witchery, kitchen witchery and folk magic.  My heart is that of an English Kitchen Witch. It was my honour to be added to the Watkins ‘Spiritual 100 List’ for 2023.

I am also the Editor and Publicist for Moon Books Publishing.

How would you describe your spiritual pathway?

Miscellaneous!   Although my learning began with Wicca (back in the days before there was the internet), my spiritual journey has twisted and turned along many different avenues over the years.  Now I would say I am an English Pagan Witch who follows a Kitchen/Hedge Witch pathway.  I work primarily with ancient English deities, and I practice folk magic.

What tips do you have for folk beginning their spiritual journey?

Read everything you can get your hands on, knowledge is power.  The Pagan/Witchcraft umbrella is huge so doing research can really help you find your way.  Remember there is no right or wrong, make it work for you.  Learn to trust your intuition, it will never let you down.  The best way to learn something is to get out there and do it!

What is something quirky about yourself?

In my youth, I belonged to Young Farmers and lived and worked on a pig farm.  On one occasion, I won the novice pig judging competition at the County Show, and for several years running, I won the title for best scones.

I played drums in an all-girl heavy metal rock band for a couple of years (called Miss) and I had a pink drum kit.

What Deity(ies) would you love to have dinner with?

The main deities I work with regularly are The Cailleach, Sulis and Belenus, and if I didn’t invite them I think they would be very upset with me!

What magical items would you take with you if you had to live on an island for a year?

I don’t work a lot with magical tools, but I do love my cauldron so that would come with me.  It is brilliant for using to safely burn things (I love burning stuff) but it also doubles as a cooking pot.  And secateurs for clipping herbs and plants.
